New Year, New You: Think Beyond Your Creative Projects

Updated: Dec 20, 2019

Look, I get it.  It's hard enough working on your creative baby, whether it's figuring out funding, schmoozing at parties or just making it happen, period.  But I invite you to think beyond and think bigger in 2020, outside of just your projects and to consider how else to utilize your skills and talents to promote yourself, because this is how you can further extend your personal brand.  This is how you get people to notice you and even to hire you for the type of work you'd like to do.  And, as a bonus, it can sometimes boost your income streams, as well as continue to market your existing projects.

Let's take New York Times bestselling author and poet Rupi Kaur as an example.  As most of us already know, Rupi started out self-publishing her work before getting noticed and signed by indie publisher Andrews McMeel.  No matter your opinion on the work itself, there is no question that she is a very savvy entrepreneur; getting "discovered" only happened after she had spent considerable energy and hours hustling.  In fact, even before she became famous, she was engaging in the following tactics to promote herself and her books, as explained here in Flare:

-Posting her poems with graphic illustrations on Instagram, making them highly shareable

-Facilitating writing workshops and panels

-Speaking at conference and events

And even today, looking at her website, you will see that she doesn't limit herself to just selling books; she also sells products and books sold out tours.  She also continues to post photography featuring herself, that aligns with her vision and brand on Instagram and on her website.  And this is just what is public facing; she may also book private engagements or be in negotiations to model for products (that again align with her personal brand).

So for 2020, I encourage you to not limit your vision to a singular focus, to your creative projects.  Think about all the possibilities that are available to you, to use your skills and talents in other ways that in turn continue to market your work, but more importantly you.  It won't happen overnight and it's going to take a lot of work, but you can't get there if you don't take the first step.  There's no need to obsess over likes and followers for now; just start with expanding your vision for yourself.
